Anyone Been to Grand Bahama Island?

I’m getting married next year and the future wife wants to go to Grand Bahama Island for our honeymoon.
As this is the only American forum I’m on I thought I’d ask this question here. You guys are more likely to have been there than us Europeans. Soooo…

Has anyone been there? What’s it like? The internet describes it as some sort of paradise, but I’m wondering if it’s really like that at all. Anyone got the low-down on this place?

My wife and I spent our 10th anniversary there… well, not Grand Bahama, but Paradise Island Bahamas. It WAS beautiful and tropical and everything you’d imagine an island paradise to be… including the crowds you’d expect at a resort. I prefer more remote and undeveloped tropical locations.

Turks & Caicos is such a place, but it is fast developing, sadly.

We got married at Sandals in the Bahama. It’s on that particular island if I am not mistaken. We had a great wedding and honeymoon. It might be worthwhile to do it all there.

Too late for that, we’ve already booked the wedding. Just need a honeymoon now. That’s my job, apparently, and she’s pretty insistent on GBI

I’m beginning to think it may be very crowded. I had a look for hotels for next April and already a lot of them are fully booked.

Went there this previous June, very nice. You will want to visit Port Lucaya, its a huge place that has a lot of Bars, Restaurants & Gift shops. I hope you like Conch because it is in every goddamned thing. Conch salad, Conch fritters, Cracked Conch, Conch soup, Conch Rice.

The beaches are great and the people are friendly. Get in good with a cab driver and you’ll get the lay of the land and the hook up to some cool spots. But Port Lucaya is where its at. There is also a casino at Port Lucaya if your into gambling.

Being Scottish I’ve never heard of Conch, but I’ll look it up

Sounds pretty cool. How are the prices for eating out, beers etc?

I’ve been to nassau a few times in my life. It’s pretty poor and really dirty. On the first cruise I went on with my wife(she was my girlfriend at the time), it was our first stop, and it scared her a bit. She asked why people come here, but then we went to paradise island, and she thought it was beautiful.

My favorite island is St. Thomas. It’s where my wife and I got married. It’s still a little dirty (all of the islands are, they have garbage disposal issues), but it is a US territory, so all of the laws are familiar to me. Might not be a plus for you since you are in the UK.

The drinks are reasonable, about 3-6US for beers. The Dinners are also reasonable 10-20US depending on where and what you eat. You would think fish would be cheaper over there but it isn’t. Conch is a mollusk type animal that is found in the ocean. Its very meaty and apparently very can be very tasty if made right.

I highly recommend you try some of the Snapper with their Crab rice. Best meal I had while i was there. You might have to go to a neighborhood restaurant to get it though. Most of the restaurants at the resorts serve traditional western food with a Caribbean flare. If you want the real stuff you have to go to the local spots. Ask a cab driver you trust to take you. Also in Port Lucaya there is a pizza place that is called Neptune I think, I really cant remember the name but there Seafood Pizza was freakin GREAT!!

Excellent!

Thanks very much for the info guys

The most important info you can give a Scottish guy going abroad is the price of a pint of beer. It’s pretty much how we determine how expensive a country is.

Enjoy your honeymoon BigDug mate.

I know Finnish people tend to lack humour but you take the fucking biscuit mate.

I don’t understand you nutters who get all worked up over what someone posts on a forum FFS.

And you are Finnish. You probably cannot afford beer. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers dude!
Funnily enough the wedding’s going to be in Glesgae 'cause she’s from Hamilton.

Of course! I’m even buying a new one for it. My old one’s getting a bit knackered.
