I was there from August 2000 to August 2001 .
Yea, some people get depressed being away from civilization, but after they leave (well, the ones I knew of anyway) they all miss the place.

Check to see if my name is up on a plaque in the gym for an “over 300” club.
Oh yea, they also have a MOT, which stands for “main outdoor theater”. which is pretty nice. They play movies that came out maybe a few months to a year earlier.
There’s also a nice pool that sits up on raised land and it’s the highest part of the island as far as altitude (the island is pretty flat).

lol, Air force has it the best.
We used to have Marines on that island (DG) but they got kicked off.
The island belongs to the British and the Royal Marines and our Marines were having too much fun for the politicians and higher ranking military personnel.
The Royal Marines are some of the funniest people I ever met, and they realy know how to have a good time.

Also, see if you can sign up for ASF (auxillary security force). You get out of standing regular watches and it’s a great experience.
You might not be able to if you’re not staying a year, but it’s worth asking about.

So you’re already in security so you get to laugh at all the ASF guys who have to patrol the island while you sit in your air conditioned room, LOL.
BTW, I don’t know if it changed or not, but our ASF guys AND our Navy security guys weren’t allowed to carry arms. Some British rule and from what I’ve heard that’s the only base that does that.
If there’s an emergency you wait for the BIOT (British Indian Ocean Territory) police to distribute the weapons.
