Another Book Thread

I just finished reading “The Postmortal” by Drew Magary yesterday. Nearly finished it on my 7-hour train ride to Seattle. It presents you with a cure for aging. Puts Will Smith and his femme robots to shame.

I’m on a re-run of a lot books I own. Currently, I’m in a massive post apocalypse phase (again) It doesn’t matter if it’s zombies, plague or nuclear war.

Currently I’m reading Zone One by Colson Whitehead.
A great, dark and gritty tale of Zone One which is Manhatten after the intial zombie sweep. It’s about Mark Spitz, just an average guy who somehow makes it through the early apocalypse. Things don’t always go well in this.

Just before that I’d read World War Z again before watching the movie, which imo both are great in their own ways. As long as you don’t expect WWZ the movie to be like the book, it’s a solid zombie flick.

Next up may be The Stand by Steven King, I’m not a fan of how things ended up but it’s a terrific post-apocalypse book otherwise.

A few other mentions in this would be
The Dog Stars - Peter Heller (a man, his dog and his airplane. Great book if a bit short, it’s got dark aspects but nothing like the rest)
Blindness - Jose Saramago (this might be one of the most depressing books I’ve ever read, us humans are disgusting creatures)
The Road - Cormac McCarthy (good movie too, terribly depressing)
Swan Song - Robert McCammon (Reminded me a bit of The Stand, a bit more fantasy in this one but still damn good)
Afterlight - Alex Scarrow (Life on an oil rig after the… guess what? Apocalypse. There’s a prequel but I’d never managed to get my hands on it, you don’t NEED to read it first however)

If anybody has more post apocalypse book suggestions, I’m all ears (eyes)
Historical fiction is also awesome.

Why did you not like the ending of The Stand?

Next one on my list is called Zero Zero Zero by Roberto Saviano whenever it gets translated about the cocaine trade.

He wrote one called Gomorrah about the Sicilian mafia, which ended up getting a lot of attention, so they put a hit out on him and he has to live life on the run with a ton of bodyguards.

Gomorra, English title Gomorrah, is about the Neapolitan organized crime organization the Camorra.

You could try the Prince of Thorns

and the two sequels. Seems like fantasy/medieval at first but is actually medieval following an apocalyptic event.

Not sure if you are looking for other crime related books but I would toss out a couple of titles

Mafia Dynasty - recounts the history of the Gambino crime family from it’s beginnings up to John Gotti

Wiseguy - You might have read this one. It’s the book that the movie Goodfellas was based on. Casino was also written by the same author.

I just finished this book called “All You Need is Kill.” It’s a short read, I believe originally written by a Japanese author than translated to english. I got interested in the book because that new Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt movie coming out in about a month or so called “Edge of Tomorrow” is based off of the book. It had an interesting premise of a soldier who keeps going back in time every time he gets killed in battle to the day before. Obviously the book will probably much better than the movie since Tom Cruise got his hands on it. I recommend the book, it will only take a day or two to read.

The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov.

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but you can check out the wiki page and see if it interests you.

Frankly, the devil you’re looking for seems really emo to me. I bet he listens to a lot of My Chemical Romance and Alexisonfire.[/quote]

Dallas Green is a musical god.

Octopussy and the Living Daylights by Ian Fleming -a good collection of James Bond short stories
