Just recently read an article regarding the importance of joint health, especially lifting heavy ass weights in bodybuilding. So I was wondering if you guys recommend a 20 year old to take glucosamine supplements? (not sure whether taking additional glucosamine is needed at my age)[/quote]

Glucosamine is a actually a very effective supplement that does work, in fact, in many cases better than prescription drugs. However, you don’t need to take it at your age. Here are three easy things that will help keep your joints and soft tissue healthy.

  1. Eat a “good” diet like everyone has mentioned. Veggies, fish, water are all going to prevent inflammation and keep joints hydrated. Your body should be making plenty of it (GC) if you are eating properly.

  2. Warm up before training with a small amount of cardio and proper stretching or mobility exercises. Cressey has a great mobility program that will take the guess work out of what type of things to do. This will promote synovial fluid production and help lubricate the joint.

  3. Get soft tissue work ( various types of massage or bodywork) or perform some sort of soft tissue work on yourself such as a foam roller. The amount of force and torque a spasmed muscle or misaligned bony framework can cause on a joint especially when lifting is incredible.

Keep these things up and your joints will stay young for years to come. Good luck.
