I’m interning in the IT department of a power company at the moment. I imagine its a bit biased, being IT and all, but EVERYONE is constantly, and unsucessfully, dieting.
I know of one girl that actually works out, and that’s it for the entire 50 people that work on this floor. I’m 6’4 and 240(not all muscle, but a good bit is) so I tend to stick out a bit.
I don’t think the rest of em have seen the inside of a gym, even though our company HAS ONE, for the better part of EVER!
My desk is near a room with like 5 women (all of whom are no less than 30lbs overweight) in it, and I can occasionally hear their conversation, and I overheard one of them say “listen to this everyone, it says here that drinking sugary drinks can put on 15 pounds a year” and I think to myself no shit.
I then hear one of the other women say “That’ll be my excuse then” and they all laugh… I’m sitting there and I want to go up to them and say “Look fatasses, all it takes is a little reading and self-discipline and you can easily lose fat” but alas, I am not an asshole/ready to be fired.
One question though, to the office workers who have been in the iron game and office game a while, what do you do about eating during the day? I’m not sure if they’d frown upon me bringing protein powder or excessive amounts of food into work everyday, what do you guys do?

Pack your shit in a soft cooler. I have one that’s about 2’ cubed and I pack food, pills, powder in a thermos, whatever. It has a shoulder strap so I can carry it in like a backpack. I can stash it under my desk easily so no issues whatsoever.

What should you do? Bring all your damn food and tell them to shove it. If they don’t like it, they’ll tell you, if they get mad you can find another solution then.
There are plenty of other people eating tons of food every day anyways, think about it… so as long as you keep your productivity high, then screw em and eat and get big.
I am a Fire Sprinkler Technician and my job occasionally puts me in contact with the corporate world. I roam through office buildings and inspect their systems. I see various types of people 90% of them are nothing special. Many are overweight, almost all of are very untrained. I suppose it goes with the times.
Anymore people do not have to be physically fit or be strong to make through the day. I am 5’5" tall and weigh in at 190. I am mesomorph all the way. When I go in these places I see women that do not want to look but can’t help it. I see men look away when I talk with them, or they try to break my hand when they shake it. I get compliments very often. Sometimes I appreciate it, but many times it makes me wonder how anyone could allow themselves to be so out of shape.
On the flipside I might make 50k a year while most of the miserable fatbodys will bring in 75k and up. In time my body will wear down, and there 401k will grow. I guess there is two sides to every story.

But remember, you can turn some of that 50k into your own retirement too. If you’re disciplined enough to keep yourself in shape, you’re probably disciplined enough to save and manage money. So, there’s extra points for you.
Also, you work for a level of fitness that will keep you looking and feeling much younger than your age, while they slowly creep toward decripitude with continued lack of activity. Sounds like you’re the winner. Especially if you actually enjoy what you do. Most of them probably don’t.
Having trained regularly for years, I’m a firm believer in the positive effects for health, attitude, productivity, etc.
In my office, I’m the boss. I asked my staff whether they would be interested in memberships to the gym two doors down from our office. They sounded enthusiastic.
So I bought gym memberships for the entire staff (and their spouses)and made it clear that I would be flexible about work hours to give the time to train.
I work at at very large company but in my office of about 20 or so I am about the only one who lifts.I would say company wise of over 4000 about 35 to 40% are obese or close to it. I try and get these guys to come lift or play ball with me but they won’t.It’s like I am a spectical, “man you are huge” or “I am not working out with you,you are not gonna hurt me”. Thing is, I am not big at all. I am 5’5 204lbs PUSSIES!!
i like this thread. it looks like most of us are immersed in the fatness that is america.
what i didn’t see anyone comment on is the following aspect: these people are sooo out of shape that just being around them is bad for us. sure, at first it may seem nice to be healthier and bigger and stronger and 10 times better looking than everyone else. but then, when you think about it, this sucks. this is terrible. you could stop training and eat like shit for HOW long and still maintain this status? yeah, you would feel bad, but you would literally have to try to look worse and would probably fail. this sucks. proximity bias. it dulls you.
think about it this way. if we all coexistedr in the same workplace, how much better off would most of us be?
has X commented here? i am amazed at how grossly unhealthy so many in the medical industry are … nurses … doctors. i find it difficult to take medical advice from someone so out of it.
anyway, my office is full of fatfux. some loser had the idea of starting a girls of [company name omitted] calendar. i have been here for 5 years and still haven’t found ms. january.

I’m right there with you on that one. I have friends and family in the healthcare industry and they’re all terribly out of shape. I really can’t understand how they can retain all that other information about healthcare and not have a damned clue about exercise and nutrition. My wife’s step-mother is a nurse and she’ll go on all day about this and that illness and how to handle it, but then she and her son and my wife’s father are pretty much morbidly obese.
Why is it that it’s so easy for these people to overlook the easiest way to skip the health issues in the first place? Sure, we all have our weaknesses and vices, but the food and exercise thing is so friggin’ obvious, I just don’t understand.

Don’t worry, think of all the money they are going to spend on medication and health care in the (maybe near) future. I could probably guarantee that your well-being and quality of life will be so much better than theirs.
I work in a large comapany that has a gym on site. It cost about $15 a month to join and everything is pretty new. I go to the gym after work and there are maybe 5 people on the treadmills and me doing deadlifts, power cleans, etc.
There are over 2500 people on site and I would say maybe 100 regular gym attendees. Just laziness here with low cost and a two minute walk to the gym there aren’t many excuses besides plain old lazy.
A bonus to me because of laziness is an entire free weight section to myself 5 days a week.
I am an office dweller - self employed in a small bookkeeping/accounting office with just one employee (at the moment) besides myself. I don’t have the time to spend working out that I would like to, and the time that I do have is inconvenient, but I work out whenever I can. My employee on the other hand, is getting wider by the month.
My wife works in an office with 5 other people, and last week someone brought in a cake to celebrate the boss’ birthday. My wife happens to be allergic to wheat, and eats basically a ciliac diet, but she found it amusing that she’s the only person in the office that isn’t fat, and she was the only person not cramming chocolate cake in their faces.
I work at Boeing, a very large company, and in my local area there are hundreds of people I run into every day. Besides myself, I can tell that one and I mean only one other guy appears to hit the iron. That’s it. I know of a couple of dedicated cyclists/runners and they’re in good shape though too lightly built because of it, but more power to them as that is working out too. At least 1/2 the people are obese and that includes the younger ladies too. Almost everybody looks to be badly out of shape.
I don’t understand how people can go through their lives that way. I know if I stopped training I’d feel terrible in a few weeks, start getting fatter, etc… and I’ll never let that happen.
Its amazing, every time somebody farts we have to have a food day at this place. Soem of these young girls start to work here and in 3 months their asses are like hyoooge. Its horrible. We have snack machines where there’s a green dot on the items that comply with some nutrional bullshit. Guess what has green dots? The gum.
