Old Guy Strength

Besides kitchen solution, maybe check out a Pittsburg powerlifter Bulldog recommended named Allen Roberts on “every damn day fitness” on youtube. Since July he’s dropped from 240 into the 180s with just protein powder for breakfast and lunch, and dinner was regular food with family, including pretty nice steaks but minimal or no booze. I think he’s about 5’8". Life seemed good throughout his weight loss. At 240 he looked like someone I’d want on my side in a bar fight, now not so much.

Since following his routine I’ve lost 15 pounds, now a pretty solid 240, 38" jeans, surprisingly more energy, and chin-ups and handstand pushups have become good friends. I’ve always had good energy, but not like this. I’m going to stop after 10 more pounds. Attractive 30 something woman yesterday came up to me and carried on quite a conversation after she said I was such a good looking guy. I told her up front my wife would kill her if she heard that (and she would). Had to get that out of the way quickly. Still, it was nice to hear.

Now if I’d just said something like that to that knockout woman who kept staring at me in a labor economics class with 200+ students in 1968…learned a lot since then.

 That’s probably some of the best stuff I have read in a while. I wonder what the girl from 1968 is up to these days.

I turned myself over to Robbie again today. Once more he had me going up and down and doing crazy sets. He keeps telling me “I know what I’m doing.” I’m not sure if he does, but he does challenge me. I had a nice crowd standing around for the set of 405, which fired me up a little more.

Yep. 405 does produce an audience of other lifters.

The girl from '68 is on her 3rd marriage, wherein she filed for divorce about 8 years ago then stopped it. After my first wife died I hired a private detective to find her and he did, but married. She’s 68 now, and my wife is a mirror image of her but 8 years younger. I used that girl’s brother (both of them are attorneys) to close on my house last year and my wife was sitting beside me the whole time. Wonder what he was thinking when he saw my wife…

New Big Guy Update:
He came in as I was doing squats. I asked about his pec. He said it still hurts. I gave him some big botherly advise and told him to baby it. Prior to leaving he called me sir again and said to have a good day. I then asked for his name, it’s Luis, and told him to call me Bill and not sir. He’s a really nice kid.

The bromance starts. Seriously, if he’s much stronger than average, get him to workout regularly with you. From 48 to about 53 I had a 20 years’ younger strong workout partner. Working out with him I was deadlifting about 500, squatting 495, and benching 335.

Trust me, you’ll both profit.

I know. I thought about what you said. I will probably ask him to jump in with Robbie and me on bench days after he heals up. He said he remembered me from when he belonged to the gym two years ago (I don’t really recall him). He said he always respected how strong I was. Therefore he earned my respect by kissing my butt.

Despite your great strength now at your age, lifting with this younger guy will increase your lift totals. All he has to do is quietly lift. I’m jealous.

I have a friend in his 50s who benches 425 fairly regularly; in his upper 20s his strength increased from lifting with a guy 20 something years older; the older guy recognized my friend’s ability and pushed him, subtly. My friend also has joint issues from the heavy lifting he’s done.

Sounds like an assault, or at least harassment. I hope you’ll be alright.
Sorry for the hijack…

I’ve recovered. Still, it felt good.

Happy Thanksgiving one and all.

Another crazy Saturday with Robbie. I know he really does not know what we are doing, but it pushes me. Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger is my thought. 405 was solid. I needed a slight bump at the bottom of 415, but I was feeling fatigue at that point anyway. He wanted me to bring my gear in next week for a max. I convinced him I’ll do a raw max next week. I got my eye on 420 or 425.

You can do 425 after today’s weights. Maybe get there after fewer reps?

That was my thought as well. I plan on a bench deload after next week. My shoulders are killing me.

You’re just trying to deflect from your 415 benching. Must be nice.
