How exactly do they work? Googled it but I still don’t really get it. I’m currently 17 years old as of this moment. My birthday is on the 27th of December, 1997. Will I be allowed to compete in the Sub-Junior category in 2016?
the callander year you turn 19 is the year you become a junior
so in your case in 2016 you will turn 19, you are a junior the whole year long. So it is kinda disadvantageous begin born in december

Really? That’s a terrible system… Why wouldn’t they go by your age at the time of the meet?

Until you’re a master.
To answer why they do it this way, it’s easier to track birthdays in an entire year than worry about a bunch of individual birthdays.
