Man, I really struggle to generate tension at the elevated height versus the floor. At this time I find 565 at the Wheel height WAY harder than 565 off the floor.

@flipcollar, @strongmanvinny, @T3hPwnisher - any tips on this? Do you set up differently for a deadlift from a higher starting point or is it just a matter of working at that height and getting used to it?

#1772

Never struggled with partials honestly. I think its a product of deadlift style. Some folks are fast deadlifters, and rely on that speed to bypass the mid part of the deadlift and blast through the end. Others are grinders, and reps of 315 move as fast at 615.

Getting stronger all over probably helps. I always like ROM progression too.

#1773

That makes sense, and sounds a bit like me. Most of my deadlifts, even new 1RM attempts, usually move pretty quickly, so it could be that I’m used to having speed & just find it so weird to start below-the-knee from a dead stop. Will keep working at it.

How much do your wagon wheels elevate the bar?

you mean with an axle on each? I didn’t see above that you’d done 565 with an axle off the floor. If you’re comparing 565 with a barbell off the floor to elevated axle, that makes more sense to me.

Axles in general are difficult to break of the floor since there’s no whip (I’m sure you’ve noticed it.) For me, it’s really about giving a sustained effort to break off the floor, knowing it won’t necessarily break immediately. Like, with a barbell, if I try to pull and the bar doesn’t immediately start to come up, I’m not gonna get the lift. With an axle, that’s not necessarily the case.

Sorry, I should’ve been a bit more clear.

Answers:

My Wagon Wheels elevate the bar about 3-4 inches higher than regular 45 pound plates.

I’ve pulled 565 on an axle from the floor several times, and actually have pulled 595 at least once on the axle from the floor.

What specifically gets me is the perceived difference in effort at 565 (since I’ve done that multiple times using both standard height plates and from the elevated Wheels) - with regular plates & axle, 565 is tough but I know it’s always there; the same weight with the wheels takes a teeth-grinding, pull-with-everything I have effort. I wondered if veteran Strongman guys had noticed a need to set up or start the pull differently from an elevated height. I’ll post a couple relevant vids.

Here’s a 565 using the Wheels:

Gotcha. yea that tends to kinda be no-mans land for a lot of people. That height isn’t better than off the floor for me either. 18" is where I can start to lift much heavier weights. 13-14 isn’t great.

So we’ll see if I actually stick to this, but I am trying to squeeze a bit more volume in during warmups. Ideally I’ll add one rep per week on the front end until I’m doing 5’s across the board up to 475 (it may take a bit longer to go from 1x475 to 5x475) & then hitting my top single somewhere in between 505-565.
