How’d the smith machine front squats work? Been thinking of giving those a try.

hel320, For front squats my “shoulder trough” holding the bar is adequate as long as I push bar hard into my Adam’s apple and place thumbs appropriately. Smith machine relieves that discomfort. Just got to keep bar hooks far enough off the holding pins. Quads are already big, but front squatting adds variety.

I see the difference in leg strength from my 50s.

Good info. Sounds like my adam’s apple dilemma. Gonna try these.

Made it to 70 today. Feel great.

Happy Birthday!!! 70 and still going strong. All the best to you.

Congrats young man !

Happy Birthday! You’re an inspiration to everyone on here.

Happy Birthday!

Thanks guys. Now if I can just change this log’s name to something more fitting.

Chris Colucci, thanks for the log name change directions. Whenever I try to save new name the message “500 Internal Server Error” appears. More directions needed for a wanna be tech savy guy.

Friend and I got identical chinup bars installed in each other’s garages. He’s building a home gym and I’ve always wanted a handy bar. Did 1 x 8 to break it in. Will try to use it often.

Yesterday, chins 1 x 10 at home. As hard as it was to install that bar system I have to get a lot of use out of it.

dips 3 x 10
cable flyes 3 x 10 @ about 200
machine flyes 3 x 10 @ about 200 also

machine presses 3 x 10 @ 90, 160, 160 (160 felt heavy on this machine for first time ever)
second machine press (from lower chest upward at angle) 3 x 10 @ 90, 160, 160
third easy machine sorta press 3 x 10 @ 90, 160, 160

Took last week off to go to lake Superior area of Wisconsin to clean out a garage I had sold last fall. Good break.

garage pullups 1 x 10

this am:
deadlifts 1 x 10 @ 135, 1 x 5 @ 225, 1 x 5 @ 295, 1 x 3 @ 325, 1 x 5 @ 295, 1 x 6 or so @ 225
barbell rows 1 x 10 @ 135, 2 x 10 @ 225
good mornings 3 x 10 @ 135
standing lat pulldowns 3 x 10 @ 55, 70, 70

deadlifts felt good today after no gym for about 2 weeks.
late afternoon garage pullups 1 x 10 is my goal for awhile.

yesterday late afternoon garage pullups 1 x 10

off today

no pullups yesterday, 100 degrees in garage at 6 pm

squats 3 x 10 @ 135, 225, 245
smith machine front squats 3 x 10 @ 135
lying leg curls 3 x 10 @ 110, 125, 140
calf raises 3 x 10 @ 245

No energy today. Need better adjust calories on this almost no carb diet. Law partner’s losing well but doesn’t lift. Guy who helped install chin bar last weekend is also on it, but he lifts. So much for peer pressure. I actually skipped the rice helping with the incredibly delicious beef and gravy thing at Rotary yesterday.

I was going to tell @NHLFTR that all you needed to do here to work up a good sweat, was breathe!

CL, you are exactly right.

When you do the smith machine front squats are your arms crossed or can you get your hands/fingertip on the bar? I can’t get any part of my hands on the bar and tried them cross armed. Worst than from a rack. When I cross my arms my front delts a higher than my chin. Trying to get a pix of this.
Switching from my regular pre-meet meal to sushi and noodles tonight. Sister-in-law makes the sushi and I figure it’s full of carbs.

hel360, I cross my arms but not as tight as I have to without the Smith machine. My fingers are on the bar so I can turn it to release the bar’s hooks. Be sure to lean into the bar.

You could also just hold the bar like the top of a clean motion. I saw a 20/30 something guy do front squats w/315 this past week. He had a really, really wide stance doing them.

Saturday pullups 1 x 10

dumbbell benches 3 x 10 @ 45, 60, 75
bodyweight dips 3 x 12
machine flyes 3 x 10 @ about 145 or so

SGHP 2 x 6 @ 135, 145, 1 x 5 @ 155
machine press 3 x 10 @ 90, 110, 115
another machine press 3 x 8 @ 90

I’ll blame the reduced weights on low carbs; can’t believe the reduced weight press movements. Pullups require moving car out of way, so I try to do them as soon as I get home in evening. Expecting great things from daily pullups when I increase sets.

You are right. Pullups are a real indicator of strength. I’m lucky to knock out four of five at a time. I saw a lady about my age at the gym Saturday cranking them out. It was impressive.
