65+ Training

Good lifting in here. Very consistent. Turning back the hands of time.

Thanks guys for the comments. Workouts feel great despite being “older”; workouts remain a good tonic for stress; having great second wife contributes too.

4/4
legs, slightly

Warmed up on treadmill l0 minutes, then light squats 3 x 10 @ bar only, 135, 225. I expect to keep weight under 300 for awhile even though hammie feels ok right now. Chins 2 x 6, some forearm work and that’s it.

4/6
chest

Warmup, then dumbbell benches 3 x 8 w/ 50s, 70s, 95s (pleased with this recent PR); low cable and then shoulder height cable exercises, 3 x 10 each setting, up to about 70 each arm; machine flyes 2 x 10 @ 140; machine incline press w/free weights 3 x 8 @ 90, 125, 135; dips 3 x 10.

congrats on the PR! Training looks good…

PRs keep your head going in the Onwards and Upwards frame of mind. Nice work.

shoulders

Warmup, then standing dumbbell presses 3 x 6 or so, 35s, 45s, 50s (6 was total of several attempts) then seated 1 x 8 w/60s; standing MP 3 x 8 @ 95, 115, 125; machine presses w/free weight 2 x 8 @ 90, 180, then l/2 reps 1 x 6 @ 230; front raises with pinched pair free weights 3 x 10 w/25s, 35s, 45s; cable lateral raises 3 x 10 w/25s.

arms

It’s Friday and I’m tired, so just some bicep, tricep, forearm work. I’ll try to do back workout Monday.

4/11
back
Warmup, then chins, 8,6,5; SGHPs 1 x 5 @ 135, 2 x 4 @ 155, 185; seated cable rows 3 x 10 @ 140, 220, 250; machine free weight pullovers 1 x 10 @ 180, 1 x 5 200.

4/12
chest

Warmup, then dumbbell benches 3 x 8 w/35s, 60s, 90s; low cable pulls for chest 3 x 10 worked up to 70 each side; dips 3 x 15; parallel (to floor) waist high standing cable flyes 3 x 10 up to 55 each side (I’m positive this machine isn’t calibrated correctly); machine incline presses w/free weights 3 x 8 @ 90, 140, 160; machine sort of flyes 3 x 8 @ 110. Too much machine work here but ok workout.

Lawyer friend who gave me my first job out of law school, died Sunday of a massive heart attack . He was 5 years older than me. I remember his father died of same thing at about same age. I just saw him last Friday at open house for new office he and his lawyer son had just purchased. We were friends for over 40 years and he did my personal legal work. I even helped him with his new house’s woodwork about 15 years ago. I feel funny about this with me lifting 4-5 days a week at 6 am and still feeling great.

Sorry for your loss, but it looks like you are kicking ass!

That kind of loss gives one deep thoughts and perspective. Sorry for your loss and give it hell till the wheels fall off.

“…give it hell till the wheels fall off” I like that one GV.

Wife and I took food to widow before funeral visitation. She was by herself in that great big house. Typical feelings of waiting for him to walk into kitchen any minute. With my second wife seated next to me I reminisced about their wedding 34 years ago where I drank gin and tonics like ice water because their summer reception was so hot. I sort of remember kissing about every attractive woman under 40 at that thing. Widow said their driver when they left reception was so drunk that he rode in back with her while her new husband drove. Typical Deke wedding. I now have to offer to help decedent’s son in his suddenly created solo law practice.

I’m just catching up. I’m very sorry for the loss of your friend. I lost my brother, grandfather and a couple real good friends over the past couple years. After the grief I have found myself thinking of them, and all the fun we had together. Your wedding story reminds me of that.

Thanks Crippler. I think it was the reality that he was only 4 years older than me, died of a massive heart attack despite regular visits to heart doctor, and that he was one of the few lawyers I trusted. About 1200 people at visitation/funeral, and it threatened rain.

4/18
arms sort of

Did significant cable and dumbbell work for biceps and triceps. Forearm work, including some work with a thick bar barbell.

Did shoulders last week.

That is a ton of people at the funeral. Thanks for the comments but those deads were tough work at the contest.

4/19
chest
Warmup, then barbell benches w/o spotter 1 x 10 @ 135, 1x 6 @185, 1 x 3 @225; dumbbell incline benches 2 x 8 @ 55, 70, 1 x 10 @ 65 (can’t presently get over 70s up for inclines even though I know how to); standing low cable pulls to chest 3 x 10 @ 50, 60, 70; pec deck 3 x 10 @ 150, 160, 160; dips 3 x 10. Good workout.

4/20
shoulders

Warmup, then seated barbell presses 3 x 8 @ 90, 100, 110; seated dumbbell presses 3 x 8 @ 40, 50, 65; shoulder machine work with free weights 2 x 8 @ 90, 180, then 1/2 rep @ 230; another shoulder machine (different angle) 3 x 8 @ 90, 140, 160; front raises w/pair free weights 3 x 10 w/25s, 35s, 45s; low cable side raises 3 x 8 w/25, 35. Ok workout, got to keep trying to get the 230 weight up.

4/21
miscellaneous

Warmup, then 1 x 6,5,5 chins (easiest ones ever); shrugs 5 x 10 @ 135, 225, 315, 405, 455; lying bicep cable curls (these seemed worthless but they were in someone’s Tnation article ) 3 x 10 @ 50, 100, 150; rope curls 3 x 10 @ 150; some forearm work and that’s it. Was not yet 100% from yesterday’s workout.

4/22
back
Warmup, then seated cable pulls 3 x 10 @ 150, 200, 240; SGHPs 1 x 6 @ 115, 1 x 4 @ 135, 1 x 4 @ 155, 1x 2 @ 190; back machine w/free weights 1 x 10 @ 180, 1x 3 @ 230; chins 2 x 5, 1 x 4; dumbbell rows 3 x 10 @ 100, 110, 120. Fried.

4/25
arms

Warmup despite 5:40 am full gym. Rope cable curls 3 x 10 w/150; preacher curl machine 3 x 8 80, 90, 110, tricep overhead cable extensions 3 x 10 @ 100, 110, 150; forearm, wrist roller w/25 lbs 2 sets; reverse grip 1/2 range curls 2 x 10 w/60, 75, then l x 10 w/homemade big circumference bar weighing at least 120 lbs. Enough to start the week after full weekend. I sorta like doing arms on Mondays instead of Fridays, and the indirect arm work I get rest of week is more than sufficient.
