50m Javelin Club

I just joined it this saturday. Man am I sore today.

You shot a javelina from 50 meters away? Where you using a bow? Or did you use a rifle (minus scope).

I figure it was a rifle since you are sore.

Nice work finalyear. What are your goals for this year? What type of javelin were you using (brand and distance rating)?

I’m not sure of the brand but it was a 70m javelin. My goal for the year is to place in the top three at our multi-event championships, which I’ll need to score about 5500 in the decathlon to do.

I only threw in High School, and my throws weren’t really impressive, so I’m still learning how to do EVERYTHING and I’m slow as hell, forget what people say about a big engine on a small frame I’ve got a 425 squat at 185 pounds, and most of the guys on the team who can’t squat over 225 torch me on the track.

You can only use as much speed as you can handle. I found practicing 3,5,7 and 9 step approaches to be the most useful. Accelerate through the final step and then plant that front foot. Hold back on throwing until you are literally whipped over the front foot.

Most important is to throw through the tip. That was my biggest issue…I always held the tip too high, and the jav took off nose up and put the brakes on. I threw about 60m in college with a 70m jav.

After graduation I got a hold of an 80m jav, which was much stiffer, and focused on accelerating at the end and throwing threw the tip rather than running really fast and just putting the brakes on. My best throw after college was a hair over 70m.

My friend’s in the club. He threw for 187 feet the other day (as a junior in high school). He’s a small guy too.
