5/3/1 or cube

I have a meet in July and wanting to use 5/3/1 or cube. Just moved to a new state so wanting to keep things simple right now.
Squat 450. Bench 300. Dead 500
Thanks for the help. The meet is raw by the way.

Nice lifts. I’ve only ever done 5/3/1 boring but big, but I enjoy it and I’ve made great progress with it (newbie gains). You’re stronger than I am though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I don’t know much about cube but if you want to keep it sounds simple 5/3/1 is as good as it gets

I’d do high frequency 531 if you can, regular 531 if not. Cube seems legit but it hasn’t stood the test of time. I’d just do Westside rather than cube, there’s a reason DE and ME are 72 hours apart and in different sessions. But for a raw lifter not using drugs Sheiko or Thibs powerlifting layer would get my vote. When I’m short on time/other focuses in life I do the jack shit template 531 and it keeps me strong. Even 2x/week combining the press/bench and squat/deadlift.

Good luck at the meet!

Either one is great ! Pick the one you would have the most fun, and believe in and work your ass off !!! Good Luck !

i’ve only tired 531 so keep that in mind. if you want to keep it simple then 531 is probably the best way to go since pretty much everything is taken care of. to me the cube is slightly more complicated and requires a little more planning but both are solid programs you shouldn’t be able to go wrong with either of them.

What is high frequency 5/3/1? I’ve never hear Jim mention anything about it.

Come on man it was the 2nd link when I googled it.

It’s basically everything I don’t like about 531 adjusted to my taste. E.g. I like more frequent training, I don’t like max reps especially on deadlifts (most common way people snap their backs up), I like being able to auto-regulate my workouts more, not just accessories but the main movements as well and so on.

Thanks. I looked around his site, and couldnt find another link other than the one you provided (which is why i never heard of it). Definitely looks interesting. I guess Im using a modified 5/3/1 since I do 2 on 1 off instead of just 4 days a week.

We have the same raw total (not that it means anything probably) and I used the Cube before my last meet and had great success. It’s a 10 week program so it might fit your timing better. When in July is the meet?

I did modify the Cube to add more volume in though but if you’re doing your work up sets correctly you’ll probably do that anyway.

I’m going to be using the cube method leading up to my next meet, sometime in the fall. Can you elaborate on this a little more?

Atypical, I found the same thing. Like Brandon says, make very small jumps in your warm up sets and do more reps. I also tend to include drop sets on max days to get a bit more volume in and go for a rep record.
IMO it’s very similar to 5/3/1 but it has you doing (moderately) heavy weight at least once a week. I’ve tried both and I’d say if you don’t have time to reprogram or tweak it, go for 5/3/1, either the regular or the powerlifting version. The cube is still good though, I’m at the end of the third wave now and I’m seeing improvements in my lifts.

Too late to do a full peaking cycle now. You might as well as do Smolov Jr. for squat or bench to try to get that up by a good 10-20lbs before the meet and just put everything else on maintenance. Go with Sheiko after the meet. 531 is good, but at your level, you can probably make bigger gains with more frequency.

Could someone link me Thib’s PL program?
