like you greg, i haven’t run a 400 since high school (4 years out). PR was 53. if you all thought the open 400 was bad, how about the 400 with hurdles. always went into oxygen debt during the last 75m…saw more and more black as i got closer to the finish line. but i can’t complain about track, i don’t think i’ve been in as good shape ever since. where did you run track that you had 400M hurdles? Her in California the longest hurdle was 330 I think? Yeah Im gonna have to get out there and try running some more 400’s and see how miserable they are

i’m in new jersey. they run 400m hurdles at nike outdoor nationals too.

yesterday i ran 6 300s at 55-60 second pace. getting ready to dive into those 400s again

nice work. I gotta find me a track ASAP! I gotta get some times. I seriously have no idea what I’d run now

.greg.

can people post their current times and weights? i believe i need to lose a couple pounds to be competitive in this event at a rec level (sub 50 times). if someone can prove me wrong, i’d love to see it.

^^Under 50 seconds for recreational level!!! If you were running 400meters under 50 seconds you’d have a full ride to a major college to run track…

.greg.

this years NCAA 400M champion was a kid from Alabama who ran a :45

Interresting. I used MapMyRun to measure a 400m distance. I found a street nearby which is about 400m.

I might run it. Getting bored of 60s and 100s. Leg day finisher! 4x400m!

So I was about to give you all a huge running history for me. But screw it, no excuses. Suffice it to say my pb is 58.3 (I know that’s horrible), and that was a little over a year ago. I haven’t run much since then. I’m 6’1" 187lbs. Let’s see what we can make happen. I’m gonna post an initial in the next few weeks (I’m in a deload week), run conditioning for a few weeks (around my lifts), and post a final at the end of the summer.

Wishing everyone puke and pain.

I’d say anything under a minute is good time, of course not including 400m specialists that is, anyone agree?

^^I’d agree with you that anything under a minute is good (depending on your weight. obviously if your heavier you’d get some leeway on times) but I do think anything under a minute would be a good time. I still havent gotten out to a track yet but maybe I can hit one up this week

This is a great thread for me because I am a 400m runner. My best time is a :49. It is a fantastic race. Even better is the 4x4 relay. Nothing is more exciting or demanding than a good relay. The most difficult distance for everybody will be different. For me my hardest is the 800m. If you are a sprinter, an 800m race will kill you then maim for lifeless body ahaha. Everybody should post their times just because 400’s are so awesome.

When I get back to university I might make use of the track and see what my time is. Not sure I can get under a minute as most of my cardio is rowing, but I am going to look to improve my running ability. I am currently at 88kg which is about 193lbs, so would be happy if I could get it under a minute.

I need to go do the concept2 500m sprint at some point, but at the moment most of my training is endurance ergs and weights. When I get back to university though I will definitely give a 400m a go and post my time regardless for how bad it is. Nothing like friendly competition to motivate you to get better.

58.8, hand timed
a painful 58.8 i might add.

You’d be surprised. Sub-50 is great for rec. level but it wouldn’t get you any money in college. I run 49 for a community college and barely get money. It’s sad that track doesn’t usually get many scholarships to hand out.

^^You just said that you run for a community college… That is college level not recreational level lol. Then you said it wouldnt get you any money but then you said that you run that time and barely get money(which means you’re getting some money)? I’m confused.

400 is the devil.

It actually got me into sprinting more then ten years ago.
Skinny me thought I was in pretty good shape and just ran it with about 70 seconds in mind (I needed to beat it in order to parachute in the military). Then I took a look at what good runners can do.
And so it hit me that until then, all these years I… have been jogging, not running.
School sport and sport culture sucks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much in Germany -I could literally write books about that.
It dawned on me that sprinting was practised seriously maybe in elementary school, and I had to do my own research how to become explosive on the track.

So today I’m not bad at 100m (11.x pretty easily), but above 200m my endurance hits a wall.
I don’t know if I ever managed sub 60secs.

I might take a watch to my cardio sessions if more people here admit they’re guilty of sprinting 400m now and then.

Lol …love the way u got technical on him

Sprint 400 meters? Might have to try that.

This is my new favorite/most hated conditioning workout since I first came across this thread. I started with a time of 1:07 the first week and have got it down to 1:01 in 3 weeks. I usually only manage 2 or 3 400’s before I feel like there isn’t much point in doing more, as I can’t keep up the intensity and pace to make it worthwhile.

I use heavy farmer walks as a finisher to the sprints, after some rest of course, and it feels brutally great. I have already noticed big improvements in my overall conditioning from just a few weeks of these 400’s. Love it!

Hoping for sub 1 minute in the next couple weeks @ 5’-11’’ 200 lbs. fwiw.

Even if you endurance is horrible, if you can run 11x you should be able to easily break 60 seconds.

I started running these just to get in shape. I have only managed 1 each time as I’ve never ran them before. I timed them twice and the first one was 1:25 and the one today was 1:17. I’m 5’11 and about 190 right now. Hopefully I can lower my time over the next few weeks and increase to more than one a day. I know my times are horrible, so if anyone has any tips they would be welcomed. How many should I be running each time? And how many days/week?
