how often should you try for your for a 1 rep max. most programs say to use % of this or that, so it must be somethig to keep track of?

Depends on how your program is designed and/or what phase you’re in.

Also depends on your experience and fitness level.

Without knowing any of those things about you, I would say a good rule of thumb is about once every 6 weeks.
